Nerja fiestas
Nerja carnival held on the third week of February in Nerja
 

The year starts with the procession of the Three Kings which takes place on the evening of January 5th. The following day is when the Spanish exchange their christmas presents.

A couple of weeks later is the Fiesta de San Anton. A street procession and fireworks held in Maro 16/17 January. This is just atwo to three minute drive form the centre of Nerja.

The Nerja carnival is held within the third week of February. 3 days of colour with popular songs, Mr and Miss Nerja and a great street parade.

Fiesta de Semana Santa is the procession held during holy (Easter week) week. March or April. This consists of three street processions depicting the finals day of Jesus Christ and his resurrection.

Cruces de Mayo, held on 3rd May consists of singing and dancing around flower crosses with local specialities. This is predominantly held within the towns of Maro and Frigilana.

Fiesta de Romero San Isidro is held on 15th May and is a pilgrimage of horses and Spanish costumes. Which commences within the centre of Nerja and ends at Nerja Caves where there is a plentiful supply and local food wine, beers and muscic until the early hours of the morning. It is one of the best days of the entire year, in which up to 10,000 people participate every spring.

Noche de San Juan is a barbecue and beach day held on 23rd June and carries through the night into 24th. This to celebrate St Lohn the birth of St John the Baptist. Therefore, It is customary to wash away your sins in the sea at midnight. This is held on beaches within the town and right along the coastline. Head for Burriana for free sardines and wine supplies by local bars and merenderos (beach restaurants).

Festival Cueva de Nerja is held during July. The Nerja Caves host nights of flamenco and classical music.

Virgen del Carmen takes place on 16th July and is the fishermen's feast day. A procession carries the virgen in fishing boats. Again this procession terminates at Burriana.

Feria de las Maravillas takes place between 7/9 September and is the local saints day. Maro holds host to festivities and a local fair.

Feria de Nerja takes place between 8/12 October and is the local saints day of Nerja. Playing host to a great fair and amusements. Local bars and discotheques set up temporary sites to help the merriment continue throughout the night. This really is an event for all of the family.

New Years Eve sees the town square playing host to local bands through the night, with fireworks when the clock strikes twelve. It is customary to eat twelve grapes and the clock strikes midnight. So if you're here during this time, don't forget your grapes.
